Enter through the carved gate

Start at the main gate beneath a towering wooden sculpture of an African family, then step into André Heller’s 3-hectare garden. The first stretch already sets the tone: palms, bright flowerbeds, ponds, and glimpses of hidden pavilions just beyond the trees.

Follow the shaded labyrinth paths

The pressed-gravel trails slow your pace under bamboo groves, mature palms, and towering cacti. Fountains, lotus ponds, and two walk-in labyrinths offer shaded surprises.

Sculptures between palms and cacti

Around bends and clearings, monumental works by Picasso, Haring, Rodin, and Calder appear among olive trees, cactus beds, and reflective water.

Atlas views from the terrace

As the paths open, the High Atlas becomes the backdrop. From clearings and the rooftop terrace, you can frame Jbel Toubkal rising beyond the greenery.

Finish in the pavilion galleries

Step into the Carmen Wiederin-designed pavilion where indoor galleries host rotating exhibitions by Moroccan and international artists.

Linger at Café Paul Bowles

Many visits end at Café Paul Bowles, with mint tea, fresh juices, or Moroccan-international plates made with on-site saffron, olives, and herbs.

Things to know before booking your ANIMA Garden tickets

Booking window

ANIMA Garden tickets are straightforward, but shuttle seats are the real bottleneck. Reserve the free shuttle at least 24 hours ahead, and expect spring and autumn departures to fill 3–7 days ahead.

What’s included

A standard ticket covers full-day entry to the three-hectare garden, outdoor sculptures, two indoor exhibition galleries, and the café area. Food, drinks, and any private transport are not included.

Entrances & flow

There is one main entrance. “Skip-the-line” here mainly means avoiding the small ticket-purchase queue, which is usually about 0–15 minutes. It does not mean separate security or priority access.

Ways to explore

Visits are self-guided. Most travelers spend 2–3 hours inside, or 4–5 hours total if they use the round-trip shuttle from Marrakesh.

Add-ons

The only built-in add-on is the free official shuttle from behind Koutoubia Mosque. It runs on fixed departures, so late booking can leave you using public bus 25 or a taxi instead.

Policies & rules

Children under 12 enter free; ages 12–16 get reduced pricing. Wheelchair access is limited on some gravel paths, and same-day re-entry is generally not included.

Galleries at ANIMA Garden

This zone is the heartbeat of the garden's "art meets nature" philosophy. It functions as a surreal open-air museum where monumental, vibrantly colored contemporary masterworks emerge naturally from dense tropical foliage, prompting immediate wonder and contemplation.

  • Where: Spanned across the core walking paths winding throughout the central estate.
  • Don't miss: Masterpieces and original installations by legendary artists like Keith Haring, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Auguste Rodin, alongside Heller's own iconic, giant face-shaped entrance with vibrant blue mosaic eyes.

A cooler, deeply immersive micro-environment shaded by towering walls of lush bamboo. This corridor offers an intentional acoustic buffer from the rest of the park, providing visitors with a quiet, meditative space away from the open Moroccan sun.

  • Where: Tucked along the dense side paths and intersections of the trail network.
  • Don't miss: The mysterious human figure sculptures blending seamlessly into the bamboo stalks and the enchanting alley of stone columns, each topped with a uniquely carved animal miniature.

A striking botanical display highlighting the resilience and structural beauty of desert life. This zone features a massive variety of cacti, agaves, and rare succulents collected from across Africa and the Americas, arranged to look like living architecture.

  • Where: Positioned in the more arid, sun-drenched patches of the property.
  • Don't miss: The geometric layout of giant barrel cacti and the clever integration of bright, blown-glass artwork nestled right amidst the sharp, prickly plants.

Replicating traditional Moroccan irrigation wisdom with an artistic spin, this zone relies on still water basins, gentle fountains, and clean channels. It is designed to act as a physical mirror to both the art and the sky, maximizing tranquility.

  • Where: The lower terraced plains and central clearings of the garden.
  • Don't miss: The breathtaking, crystal-clear reflection of the often snow-capped Atlas Mountains (including Jbel Toubkal) mirrored on the surface of the main pool garden during the golden late-afternoon hours.

A dedicated resting and culinary zone named in honor of the famed American expatriate author. The café serves fresh Moroccan-international fusion cuisine, with dishes flavored by organic saffron, mint, and olives harvested directly from the garden.

  • Where: Situated within the main pavilion complex near the estate’s exit.
  • Don't miss: Head up to the panoramic rooftop terrace to enjoy a fresh beverage while taking in an unobstructed, bird's-eye view of the entire garden canopy set against the Atlas foothills.

Serving as the only fully indoor zone of the attraction, these two minimalist exhibition halls feature rotating galleries of contemporary paintings, photography, and mixed-media pieces from global and local Moroccan artists.

  • Where: Located inside the entry pavilion complex.
  • Don't miss: The temporary curated art showcases that offer an intimate, indoor contrast to the permanent, monumental sculptures scattered outside.

Monumental sculptures by Picasso, Haring, Rodin, and Calder

Scattered through shaded clearings and hidden nooks, these outdoor works place museum-grade modern art directly among palms, bamboo, and cactus. Spot pieces by Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring, Auguste Rodin, and Alexander Calder between plantings.

The global botanical labyrinth

Collected from five continents, ANIMA’s plantings range from towering palms and mature olive trees to dense bamboo groves and giant desert cacti. The winding layout creates cool pockets of shade, so the garden feels exploratory rather than ornamental.

The twin maze labyrinths

Near the café, two walk-in labyrinths—one circular, one angular—turn the garden into something you actively navigate. They’re worth seeking out for the unusual geometry, playful sense of discovery, and the hidden bench tucked into one center.

The Atlas Mountain vista

From the rooftop terrace of Café Paul Bowles and several northern clearings, you get clean sightlines to the High Atlas and Jbel Toubkal. The contrast between lush foliage and snow-capped peaks makes this ANIMA’s defining photo moment.

The indoor galleries by Carmen Wiederin

Inside the central pavilion, two exhibition rooms designed by architect Carmen Wiederin host rotating contemporary shows by international artists. They add a cooler, museum-style pause to the visit and show that ANIMA is more than an outdoor sculpture garden.

Tips & guidelines

  • Take the 9:30am shuttle: Cooler air and softer light make the gravel paths easier.
  • Head to the cactus garden first: Morning sun defines the tall forms before shadows flatten them.
  • Pause at Café Paul Bowles after 11am: The rooftop frames Jbel Toubkal best on clear days.
  • Use the two labyrinths midway: They break up the walk and keep younger visitors engaged.
  • Save the indoor galleries for peak heat: They offer shade without cutting the art flow.
  • Wear closed shoes: Pressed gravel is mostly flat, but narrow offshoots feel rougher underfoot.
  • Stick to main paths with strollers or wheelchairs: The lower garden is smoother than side trails.
  • Allow 2 to 3 hours inside: Rushing skips the hidden sculptures, ponds, and quiet benches.
