Learn about ancient water engineering

Le Jardin Secret is one of the few places in Marrakech where visitors can discover the ingenious khettara irrigation system that has supplied water to the Medina's gardens for centuries.

Brief history of Le Jardin Secret

The origins of Le Jardin Secret date back more than 400 years, when the site formed part of a grand palace complex during the Saadian dynasty. In the 19th century, it was rebuilt by an influential caïd (local governor) and became one of the Medina's most prestigious private residences.

After decades of neglect, an extensive restoration project began in the early 2000s. Following years of careful archaeological research and conservation work, Le Jardin Secret reopened to the public in 2016, preserving its architectural heritage while restoring its historic gardens and water systems.

Architecture & design

Le Jardin Secret is a fine example of traditional Islamic and Moroccan palace architecture. The complex is centred around two contrasting gardens—the Islamic Garden, designed according to classic Islamic principles of symmetry, water, and shade, and the Exotic Garden, featuring rare plants from five continents.

The surrounding palace buildings showcase handcrafted zellige mosaics, carved cedar wood ceilings, ornate plasterwork, decorative fountains, and peaceful courtyards that embody the elegance of historic Moroccan riads. One of the site's architectural highlights is its sophisticated underground irrigation system, which still channels water throughout the gardens using centuries-old engineering techniques.
